Types of perfume oils - Quality Differences

Before buying perfume oils, one should be familiar with the types of perfume oils and their differences. There are two main types of perfume oils (1) cosmetic grade and (2) manufacturing grade.

Cosmetic Grade

Cosmetic grade oils are also known as body oils and "cut" oils. The primary use of these oils is to be applied to the skin to serve as perfume.

These oils contain carrier oils like jojoba oil or grapeseed oil that replace the function of alcohol in releasing the scent. Body oils work with your body chemistry and sometimes the smell will not be as strong until you actually apply it to your skin.

Without carrier oil, you will not be able to smell the oil unless you put your nose right up to it or if you are outside in a strong breezy area.

Because of the added carrier oil, these oils may not be suited for making wax candles. Using these oils in such candles may result in small explosions when the candle is burning. Gel candles tend to respond well to both types of oils.

Manufacturer's Grade

Manufacturer's grade oil is mainly used to make scented products, particularly soap and candles. These oils are uncut and should not be used directly on the skin since they can cause skin damage due to their strength. However, they can be used in bath and body products since they will be diluted in those mediums.

The table below provides general guidelines for using oils. Note that perfume oils can vary from company to company so use your own judgment and ask plenty of questions.
