Perfume oil recipes

Here are some popular products that you can make using perfume oils:

1. Perfume / Cologne / Aftershave

Perfume companies use a special alcohol solution containing fixatives. However, in many instances, the results can be nearly duplicated with household ingredients. If you wish to make perfume or cologne out of the oil, basically add 3oz of alcohol solution to make eau de cologne/perfume or 5oz of alcohol to make eau de toilette to 1oz of the concentrated oil. It is best to start with a small amount of oil and add alcohol solution gradually, testing as you go along since alcohols and oils vary in strength.

Some dilutants that can be used to soften the scent of the oils are grain alcohol, jojoba oil, IPM, or witch hazel. Deionized water can also be used to reduce the strength of the alcohol - normal water will not dissolve with the oil.

Another recipe can be found below:

4 oz. denatured alcohol
1 oz. cold spring water
1 oz. pure vegetable glycerin***
2 oz. of perfume oil
Shake/mix well and refrigerate tightly covered for 4-6 weeks for maximum strength.

***the glycerin acts as a binder and prevents the mixture from seperating. Also increases the staying time of the scent on your skin. Glycerin is relatively cheap at about $8.00 per 8 oz. bottle.

For 8 ounces of perfume that would retail for approx. $140.00, it costs $20.00 to make.

2. Lotion, shower gel, bath crytals, and massage oil

To make 16 oz of lotion, shower gel, bath crystals, and massage oil, simply add 1/6 oz of concentrated oil and mix together with the unscented medium. Note that perfume oils can vary in strength depending on where you get them, so use your own judgment.

3. Shampoo

Add only 10 drops of oil to 16 oz of unscented shampoo to make scented shampoo. Be sure not to use too much oil in shampoos.

4. Incense

Get DPG (an oil based dilutant), unscented sticks, incense bags, bucket and newspaper. For every ounce of DPG, use 1/4 to 1/6 oz of oil. The greater the oil concentration, the stronger the incense. Mix up the solution and soak the thick part of the incense sticks for 10-30 seconds. Let the sticks dry on the newspaper and then place them in the incense bags.
